Edamame are young soybeans harvested before full maturity and typically boiled in salted water. Unlike tofu, natto, or kinako—which are all made from mature soybeans—edamame are enjoyed as a fresh, lightly sweet, and tender snack.

Usually boiled or steamed with salt, served in pods; beans are eaten by squeezing them out.
Cultural Background
A popular summer snack in Japan, especially enjoyed with beer at izakaya (Japanese pubs).
Cautions
Do not eat the pods. People with soy allergies should avoid edamame.
